In the recently concluded B4E COP 17 Dialogue in Durban, UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon addressed the need for global solidarity and global vision to fight environmental degradation.

To deliver this, the annual B4E Global Summit will convene for the first time in Berlin, on 21 – 23 May this year, with participation from more than 600 industry experts and world leaders.

Berlin is indisputably one of the greenest cities in the world, with two-thirds of its surface made up of diverse parklands and large forests. It is also home to many environmental-friendly architecture, which the Summit has strategically chosen two to hold its meetings in.

EnergieForum

Berlin’s EnergieForum epitomises how the use of innovative technologies can create a truly sustainable structure. The stunning century-old building was originally a municipal gas works until its transformation in 2003.

Through the use of renewable energy sources and modern technical equipment, EnergieForum was redesigned into an ensemble of office space and conference facility that complied with the strictest low-energy standards. Energy consumption and carbon emissions were therefore heavily reduced.

In effect, the iconic building requires 70 per cent less energy than buildings of similar size and functions.

Radialsystem V

Similar to the EnergieForum, the Radialsystem V brings forth rich heritage as a sanitation system that supplies water from River Spree to the city in the early 1900s.

The building was, however, abandoned after its destruction during the Second World War. Gerhard Spangenberg, subsequently, took up the reconstruction project in 2004.

Today, the Radialsystem V is touted as the new cultural space for the arts. It is fitted with multi-functional rooms that can be flexibly changed according to events.

Both of these buildings are located few blocks away from each other along the River Spree in Ostbahnhof. Together, they share a symbiotic relationship with the vision of the Summit to bring about an unprecedented synergy for sustainable breakthrough in May.
