B4E Global Summit 2009
The Green Imperative: Leadership, Innovation and Technology
B4E Global Summit 2009, Paris - France
The world stands on the brink of an economic and environmental disaster. Climate change, food shortages and global recession are having a devastating impact on nations throughout the world. Never before has humankind faced such a threat.
But there is hope. By driving forward the transformation towards a low carbon economy, governments, businesses and the public sector can play a crucial role in ushering a new era – one with innovation, technology and sustainability at its heart.
B4E, the Business for Environment Global Summit, is the leading international conference focusing on business and the environment. Now in its third year, B4E 2009 will highlight the most urgent environmental challenges facing the world economy today, asking what needs to be done to turn crisis into opportunity.
CEOs and senior executives from leading global companies will join leaders from government, international agencies, NGOs, and other organizations to discuss resource efficiency, green jobs, renewable energy, new business models and climate strategies. Delegates will learn how to identify and manage the risks posed by climate change and explore the commercial and political benefits of investing in a green economy.

| 1130 – 1230 | Panel Discussion Building the green economy: Policy for a changing planet Many of the proposed solutions for rescuing the global economy focus on restoring financial stability but should they be targeted to prop up ailing, outdated industries or used to create the building blocks of new, green economies? Careful investment now, in areas like sustainable urban planning and integrated transport systems, could help emerging economies leap into a low carbon future, avoiding the mistakes of the developed world. How can investment in the green economy help reverse the financial meltdown and tackle climate change and increasing natural resource scarcity, while generating new and decent jobs? Should there be greater a role for business at future climate negotiations? And by not acting now, what problems will we store up for the future? Chaired by: Achim Steiner, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme Panelists: Kevin Conrad, Executive Director for the Coalition for Rainforest Nations & Special Envoy on Climate Change, Papua New Guinea Chantal Jouanno, Minister of State for Ecology, Energy and Sustainable Development, France Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Pascal Husting, Executive Director, Greenpeace France Juan Rafael Quesada, Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Mexico |

| 1510 – 1615 | Panel discussion Solving environmental challenges through innovation and technology New technology is a key component in the fight against climate change but does the infrastructure exist to achieve the necessary innovation? How can new operating models be scaled up to contribute to social, economic and environmental development? Speakers in this session will be exploring whether the right education systems are in place to support “green innovation”, if there is enough funding for research and development, and what lessons might be learnt from nature. The panel will also look at what technology is available to exploit mainstream renewable energy sources and discuss how power might be generated in the future. Chaired by: Bryan Walsh, Editor, Time Magazine Panelists: Janine Benyus, President, Biomimicry Institute John Gaffney, Executive Vice President, First Solar Chul-Ki Ju, Secretary General, Global Compact Korea Network & former Ambassador to France and UN James Leape, Director General, WWF International Bunker Roy, Founder, Barefoot College India Click here to download presentation Graeme Sweeney, Executive Vice President, Future Fuels & CO2, Shell International Petroleum |

| 1640 – 1750 | Panel discussion Resource efficiency and the green transformation of business Modern economies are more wasteful than ever but with dwindling resources and an increasing global population they can no longer afford to be so. Companies need to be more efficient in their use of energy, water and raw materials, not only to reduce their environmental impacts, but also to survive in what will become an increasingly competitive marketplace. Speakers in this session will set out the business case for improved resource efficiency and will investigate whether there are alternative operating models that could help transform big business and industry towards a truly resource efficient society. Chaired by: Sylvie Lemmet, Director, UNEP DTIE Presenter: Amory Lovins, Chairman, The Rocky Mountain Institute Panelists: Toshio Arima, Executive Corporate Advisor, Fuji Xerox Philippe Carli, Chairman and CEO, Siemens France Steffen Frankenberg, VP Corporate Development, Deutsche Post WorldNet Neil Hawkins, Vice President & Chief Sustainability Strategist, Dow R Anthony Hodge, President, International Council on Mining and Metals |

| 0945 – 1245 | Parallel sessions: Presentations, discussions and working groups Leading the way – Innovating new business models for a changing world As the world comes to terms with the fallout from the economic crisis, there is a growing consensus that the old ways of doing business are outdated and that innovative alternatives are needed. This session will look at a variety of emerging business models and will discuss what characteristics they must adopt if they are to thrive in a low carbon economy. Can these innovators help rewrite the basic profit and loss tenets of today’s corporations? Can they build a convincing business case for a resource efficient economy? And what role can social and environmental entrepreneurs play in transforming business practices? Chaired by: GBS Bindra, Global Director of Innovation, Logica Presenters and panelists: Janine Benyus, President, Biomimicry Institute Barend van Bergen, Director, KPMG Sustainability Services Chris Deri, Executive Vice President, Edelman John Elkington, Founding Partner & Director, Volans Ventures Alex MacGillivray, Head of Programmes, AccountAbility Len Sauers, Vice President, Global Sustainability, The Procter & Gamble Co. Click here to download presentation Anders Wijkman, EU Parliament Member Environmental leadership in the ICT sector – What more can be done? The information and communications technology (ICT) sector has been hailed as the saviour of many of the world’s environmental problems. The Climate Group’s SMART 2020 report, published last year, suggested that the sector could deliver carbon savings five times larger than its total 2020 emissions. However, critics say ICT isn’t solving problems; it’s displacing or adding to them. Panelists in this session will look at what role ICT can play in the transition to a green economy, and highlight ways in which it could help other sectors reduce emissions. And with a huge expected increase in product demand from emerging economies, what is the sector doing to improve its own environmental performance, reduce energy consumption and increase the lifespan of its products? What is it doing to reduce electronic waste and what does the future hold? Chaired by: Molly Webb, ICT Programme Director, The Climate Group Presenters and panelists: Serge Adam, Vice President Southern EMEA, South & Central America, Tandberg Bruno Berthon, Global Sustainability Lead, Accenture Marc Fossier, Executive Vice President, Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, Orange Zoe McMahon, Environmental Strategy Manager, EMEA, Hewlett-Packard Dennis Pamlin, Global Policy Advisor, WWF Naofumi Sakamoto, Senior Researcher, Corporate Planning and Business Development, Hitachi Ltd Bernard Spitz, Chairman, BS Conseil Chris Tuppen, Chief Sustainability Officer, BT Group Click here to download presentation Sustainable Urban Development – Expertise and technology transfer The year 2007 marked a seminal moment in human history — for the first time ever, the number of people living in cities exceeded those in the countryside — and that trend looks set to continue. As cities are notoriously resource hungry, they have and will continue to have a huge impact on the planet, so it’s vital that planners, governments and residents work together to reduce their environmental footprint. This session will consider how the mega cities of the future will look, exploring the benefits and practicalities of integrated sustainable transport systems and “intelligent” buildings that allow users to control their environmental performance. How can we engage cities in emerging economies with sustainability issues? And how can green technology be best brought to markets in the developing countries that often need it most. Chaired by: Arab Hoballah, Chief, Sustainable Consumption and Production UNEP DTIE Presenters and panelists: Stefan Denig, Vice President, Siemens AG Barbara Dubach, Senior Vice President and Head of CSR, Holcim Click here to download presentation Dominique Heron, Vice President for Partnerships, Veolia Environnement Werner Jager, Head of Technology Hydro Building Systems & Managing Director Buildtec Francoise Helene Jourda, Author, Professor and Principal, Jourda Architects Jane Drejer Nielsen, Executive Climate Advisor for the City of Copenhagen Delivering environmental solutions through finance and investment This session asks what role financial and investment vehicles can play in delivering environmental solutions. Are current economic rescue packages targeting the right industries? What sorts of innovative and green financial products and services could help companies transform their business practices? Will environmental concerns be abandoned as companies try to secure financial stability at all costs? Investing in social, environmental and ethical funds has seen a steady rise in popularity over the past few years but when will these issues be integrated into mainstream investing? Could this brand of “caring capitalism” become the economic model of the future? Chaired by: Martin Hancock, Chief Operating Officer, Westpac Institutional Bank Presenters and panelists: Alois Flatz, Managing Partner, Zouk Ventures Matthew Hale, Managing Director, Sustainable Banking, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch Anne-Catherine Husson-Traore, CEO, Novethic Click here to download presentation Andrew Menzies, Managing Director, Earth Capital Partners Rod Parsley, Partner, Perella Weinberg Partners Robert Tacon, Senior Advisor, Sustainability, Standard Chartered plc & Chair, UNEP-FI Advancing the extractives industry in reducing environmental impact The extractives industry — oil, gas, mining and metals — arguably receives the most criticism for its environmental impacts of any sector. The speakers in this session will look at what the industry is doing or should be doing to improve its performance, including the integration of environmental health and services and the implementation of codes and conducts. Have these codes been effective and are companies really committed to changing the way they operate? Should there be more collaboration between sectors to improve efficiency? And to what extent is corruption undermining any environmental gains? Chaired by: Dominic Waughray, Director, Environmental Initiatives, World Economic Forum Presenters and panelists: Tom Burke, CBE, Environmental Policy Adviser, Rio Tinto Catherine Tissot Colle, Executive Vice President, Sustainable Development, Eramet Click here to download presentation Abdulai Darimani, Environment Program Officer, Third World Network Africa Jean-Yves Gilet, Chairman, Entreprises pour l’Environnement, EVP & CEO, ArcelorMittal Stainless R Anthony Hodge, President, International Council on Mining and Metals Gearoid Lane, Managing Director, British Gas New Energy, Centrica plc Tackling the global water crisis: Innovative solutions for business and society The world faces a water crisis. Rising population, climate change and increasing resource use mean that shortages, disease, starvation and even conflict are inevitable unless action is taken. The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, has already raised the possibility of water wars in the future. As companies develop water strategies in response to this crisis they face challenging questions. Are they ready to deal with the impact of potential water shortages? Do they know how to measure their water “footprint”? How can they collaborate with suppliers to manager water risks throughout the supply chain? Can businesses and communities benefit from investing in local access to clean water and sanitation? The panel will discuss these issues, and will look at whether water waste management systems are robust enough to conserve what is likely to become the planet’s most valuable resource. Chaired by: Gavin Power, Deputy Director, UN Global Compact Presenters and panelists: Claus Conzelmann, Vice President – Safety, Health & Environment, Nestlé Group Adam Muellerweiss, Director, Global Corporate Water Strategy, Dow Henry Northover, Head of Policy, WaterAid Bunker Roy, Founder, Barefoot College India Will Swope, Vice President and Director of Corporate Sustainability, Intel Ian Walsh, Global Head of Environment, Cadbury Paul J.
